Welcome to my E-portfolio! Here you will find a collection of my work as a student in the dental hygiene program that reflects my growth and understanding of the field thus far. I look forward to continuing my educational journey within the field of dental hygiene and soon beginning my career as a licensed dental hygienist helping people treat and prevent periodontal disease.
Philosophy Statement
The field of Dental Hygiene continues to advance with new techniques of performing treatment, new dental products, and new dental hygiene professionals entering the field every year. Innovative ideas continue to emerge to address the health needs of individuals across the globe. I believe that dental hygiene goes beyond the scope of knowledge and skill. It also encompasses compassion. These are the elements for providing great patient care, patient satisfaction, and trust.
I have chosen to work as a dental hygienist because I want to help people achieve and maintain oral health. This includes removing stains, plaque, placing sealants, and educating patients on their oral needs and their role in addressing these concerns. As a result, together we can prevent cavities, tooth loss, and fight against any present systemic conditions. My approach will come from my learning and understanding of the field from the dental hygiene program at West Los Angeles College as well as my knowledge of presenting treatment plans for patients over the last twelve years. It was during this time that I learned a lot about the importance of thoroughly educating patients on the condition of their oral health so they may make an educated decision when consenting to treatment. My approach will be forthcoming and welcoming to address any patient concerns. My skill in scaling and carrying out hygiene procedures will simply be a bonus.
I have had the privilege of working alongside general dentists, endodontist, oral surgeons, orthodontist, and dental hygienists since 2010 who have all been very instrumental in developing my understanding of oral care. I have witnessed each of them provide quality oral care while exuding professionalism and compassion. Many of them often volunteered their time to provide free oral care to underprivileged communities. It is without a doubt that they have influenced me in my decision to become a dental professional. I've always looked up to them with regard to the way they provided dental care to patients with such ease and professionalism. I could tell it is a profession they really love.
Upon graduating from the program, my goal will be centered around helping patients attain the necessary understanding of their oral condition to be diligent in taking care of their oral health. This includes routine oral hygiene home care, routine dental hygiene appointments, and use of dental products specified to the needs of each individual patient. It is not just about providing care during re-care appointments. I want to ensure that patient's are provided with the necessary information and guided in the appropriate direction to obtain the tools necessary to achieve oral health.
Going into this profession will impact me considerably. I have always enjoyed helping people and this time I am able to take a giant leap forward in helping with overall oral health. I will have the privilege of working in an interactive environment where I will continue taking a seat as a student because in healthcare, learning is nonstop. The hands on experience will only enhance my multi-sensory learning experiences that go beyond what can be achieved through text books. As an intern, I have already had many rewarding experiences that I am certain will carry over into my professional career.
